A reputation is a wide spread belief on a certain thing or
someone that has particular characteristic. This can either be a good or a bad
reputation depending on how people view the certain thing or someone. In radio
or television terms, having a good or bad reputation is judged by the audience
as decided whenever a station has dependable by the news stories they broadcast,
including the facts and figures shown to back up each story. This can also be
companied by who they feature; for example a well know legendary celebrity, could gain the programme a wide range of audiences who will take interest on the station, and
view the channel as a good entertainment source. which could then be spread by the world
of mouth in positive way. This can also go opposite by an individual viewing a
certain station as “boring” and not entertaining enough, and goes to another to press their opinions, who may not be familiar with station which will make this person assume
automatically what they have been told without bothering to check for facts
or hear the stations themselves to concluded what they think of it.
Radio as well as television stations needs to be able to maintain
a good reputation in order for viewers to see their sources as reliable. If not,
then the general public will have difficulties believing what is said on their
news channels/ stations as they would have the perception that the station is
not reliable, therefore everything published by them is not true.
For many years BBC has been seen as a trust worthy station
which has allowed their large audience to be able to gather many factual information.
BBC viewers, listeners and users can rely on the BBC to provide internationally
respected news services to audiences around the world and they can expect the
BBC to keep them in touch with what is going on in the world, giving insight
into the way people live in other countries. Unfortunately, other the past few
years some viewers have become presemistic about the company as many reports have show the company to being bias. there has been some critics allegations that the corporation lacks impartial and objective journalism have regularly been made by observers.
Fox News is known for its bias news which has lead them to a
bad reputation. This news station is swarming with conservatives that are not
afraid to voice their opinion. This news channel attracts the conservative
viewers while letting everyone else fall by the waste side. News is biased
because here you have a station that voices their opinion rather than give
straight news. News stations like Fox are entertaining and grab the viewer’s
attention. This station is more likely to attract conservative men who seek
conflict. Fox news has gone to great lengths to show their conservatism. In a
2010 study of the news coverage of the 2004 political party conventions, Morris
and Francia found that Fox news reporting was more negative toward the
Democratic Convention and gave Republicans more opportunity to voice their
message than the other networks. The study also found that viewers who relied
on Fox news coverage exhibited attitude change toward both candidates, but
particularly a lowering opinions toward John Kerry. In contrast the study found
that CNN's coverage was more fair and balanced.
As viewers we rely on media to sway our opinion on
political, social, and economic issues. Channels/ station maintaining a good reputation
for the audience is extremely important as it allows the audience to believe what is
being said on the news and take it into more consideration as the news could be giving waring on a certain story which may affect the, so therefore of the staion has a good reputation will help them get the audience to believe what they are bing told. The facts/ figures shared by the station helps the
audience gain more knowledge on pressing issue which could be affecting the
world. Without being bias allows the audience make their own judgment on a
certain issue instead of the reporter having to press their opinion on the
audience.
